Dangers of RadonRadon gas is rather common in the Triad, especially in Montana and Wyoming. For information about the dangers of radon gas in the home, read the link below: Radon Dangers For a detailed map that shows the high radon areas of America and the Triad (colored in purple), open this link: Radon Map People from many parts of the country don't know about radon and the health problems it may cause (second largest reason for lung cancer in America, etc.). About twenty years ago my parents were living in rural housing development area just north of Grand Junction, Colorado. My parents were among the first to build a house in the area. My father deliberately failed to have a basement because he knew the area was very high in radon gas. One day a neighbor was visiting my dad. He had built a home across the street about a year earlier and was curious about why my father didn't have a basement. My father's mention of "radon" may well have been a Crow word, as the man had no idea what he was talking about. My father explained and suggested that the man may want to do a radon check for both his basement and upstairs (the family lived most of the time in their bedroom basement section). It turned out that the radon count was over three-times the safe level. The man eventually spent a considerable amount of money trying to make his basement radon safe. The best reading he could get, even after spending mega-bucks, was still borderline dangerous. Before purchasing a house with a basement, or building a house with a basement, ask about the local radon levels, and also do a radon check. ~ Ben |
